Magic day here at DPS last Friday…Grandparents Day! The weather was spot on, and the turnout we had was super impressive. After a short performance from both the junior and senior kapahaka, our whānau were taken off to the classes to enjoy time with their young people. Stories were read, jigsaws were done, learning was shared, snakes and ladders were played, cups of tea and coffee were shared…and a whole lot of connections were made between people.
When I spoke at the start…I mentioned that relationships were at the heart of powerful learning. When we truly get alongside children, truly get to know and understand them, truly appreciate them for who they are and who they might become…that’s fertile ground for learning to happen. I think it speaks volumes about the positive relationships we have here at school, that so many whānau turned up on the day…and that the rooms were full of smiles, laughter and proud people (adults and children).
We have a compulsory school uniform and this can be purchased through NZ Uniforms. All uniform items must be named inside with a permanent marker or have sewn on name tags. Hats are compulsory for outdoors in Terms 1 and 4. Any items worn under the DPS uniform that can be visible, need to be black. Shoes and socks must be black also. All children playing sports for DPS must wear the DPS sports uniform. This can also be purchased through NZ Uniforms. No jewellery except for items of high sentimental value or taonga. Due to safety concerns, stud earrings are the only type of earrings to be worn. We appreciate your ongoing support with ensuring that your child is wearing the correct and tidy uniform to school.
On Wednesday Kahikatea had an awesome time listening to stories and learning from Ruud Kleinpaste, The Bug Man!
We got to look at a few spiders and even hold a couple of wētā – one from the Wellington region and another from down south. We also had the opportunity to release a couple of baby Vagrant spiders into the garden area. It looks like we might be setting up a wētā habitat sometime soon, too!
Our ākonga were super engaged and curious throughout the kōrero. Have a chat with your child at home to find out what they learnt and what they enjoyed most.
A big thank you to Ruamāhanga Restoration Trust for arranging and funding Ruud’s visit. What an awesome learning opportunity! Lucky kids.
Ka rawe, koutou!
In writing i tēnei wiki, we have been learning to use adverbial phrases, possessive apostrophes and similes.
Check out our awesome mahi! Ka pai, ākonga!

As more students enjoy riding their scooters and bikes to and from school, we'd like to remind everyone to stay safe. Please encourage children to ride carefully, be mindful of pedestrians, and use footpaths and road crossings safely. Wearing a properly fitted helmet is essential, and we ask all riders to slow down and show courtesy to others, especially around the school gates and nearby footpaths after school.
Thank you for helping keep our students and community safe.
We are very fortunate that our Board of Trustees subsidises stationery each year, helping to keep costs as low as possible for families. We kindly ask that all learners pay the $15.00 stationery contribution as soon as possible.
