Last week I wrote about the amazing opportunities here at DPS…and they keep on coming:
Arrow FM were in this week to record the next DPS Radio Show. The students have been hard at work writing their scripts and practicing. How awesome that our young people get to be radio producers and announcers at a young age!
Science is a popular thing here at DPS…we get the House of Science learning kits in for the children, which they love. Such a variety of experiments and experiences. Next week the Science Roadshow is here at Douglas Park as well. Kōwhai, Rātā and Kahikatea get to experience this…and a bunch of our Te Rōpu Kaiarahi get to be facilitators/helpers with the Roadshow adults. So good!
And, on Sunday our two Aquabot teams competed in the regional event in town. Super challenging tasks…but the children problem-solved and persevered through it. The Hydro Hackers team came third, and our Aqua Avengers came second! How good!
Our Learning Showcase is on today…the school looks stunning inside and out. The students are excited to have an audience for their mahi, and I’m excited by what I see around the classrooms. I’ll write about it next week…but just for now I wanted to say that the richness, the variety and the strength of the learning in the classrooms is seriously unreal.
No secret that there is a lot of illness out in the community at the moment…this RNZ article highlights it, and stats released this week showed we are in the middle of the worst absences for three years.
But…things appear to be OK here at DPS (touch wood). Last week saw a few more children away than normal (normally we would have roughly 30 children away on any given day…last week we were roughly 50 away each day)...but this week things appear to be back to the normal 30 kids.
We really appreciate whānau keeping children home who are unwell…I know there is a nationwide push to lift attendance, but sending sick children to school just passes it around and leads to further illness.
Out of Zone applications for Terms 1 and 2, 2027 are now open. You can either email the office about applying, or fill in the form on our website: https://www.douglaspark.school.nz/enrolment. If you know of whānau who live outside our school zone, please let them know. We always have people who miss the cut off…and therefore miss out on attending our marvellous school.
Also…if you know of whānau inside our school zone who are considering schools for their child, feel free to mention us. I am more than happy to sit down with prospective parents, and to take them on a tour of our wonderful little school. Email the office to set up a time: office@douglaspark.school.nz

As more students enjoy riding their scooters and bikes to and from school, we'd like to remind everyone to stay safe. Please encourage children to ride carefully, be mindful of pedestrians, and use footpaths and road crossings safely. Wearing a properly fitted helmet is essential, and we ask all riders to slow down and show courtesy to others, especially around the school gates and nearby footpaths after school.
Thank you for helping keep our students and community safe.
We are very fortunate that our Board of Trustees subsidises stationery each year, helping to keep costs as low as possible for families. We kindly ask that all learners pay the $15.00 stationery contribution as soon as possible.
