Tell us a bit about yourself
Kia ora e te whanau! Ko Camryn Williams tōku ingoa. I am 22 and studying political science, Māori studies and law at Victoria University in Wellington. I was a pupil at DPS from its opening to 2008 before finishing my schooling at St Matthews. I really enjoyed my years at DPS and have some lasting memories, I even still spend some time at the school as my lovely mama is Mrs Williams! When I am not studying, I work part time at the Ministry of Justice department Te Arawhiti which is responsible for Māori-Crown relations. I also enjoy making new friends, eating food and exploring the city, country and world I live in.
What was one of your favourite activities in class?
As a DPS student I really enjoyed being a councillor. It was really fantastic to be recognised by my peers as a leader in my final year at DPS. I enjoyed all of the opportunities we were given to be a leader and make our own decisions. I was a part of the team that would organise the school disco and this task taught me skills that I still use today including delegation, collaboration and communication.
What is one of your favourite memories from attending DPS?
If I had to pick one memory it would be during year 6 in Mr Sinton's class when our class was awarded a School-gen award from Genesis energy. The class had worked very hard and were gifted solar panels for the school and a trip to see the wind turbines. It was very different to conventional learning as we were put in charge of a huge project and were able to interact with external sources.
What is something you learnt at DPS that has helped you throughout life?
When I was at DPS, PRIDE was first introduced and quickly became a big part of learning and being at the school. It isn’t until you leave that you understand how important those values are throughout life - every PRIDE value has played a big part in the way I conduct myself as a student at both college and University as well as an employee at various jobs.
What is something you have achieved in your life that you are really proud of?
I am very proud of what I have achieved in my studies so far. I am proud of the work I have put in at university over the last four years and the work I will continue to do until I graduate.
What are your goals for the future?
My short term goal is to graduate with my degrees in 2021. My long term goal is to find an area of law or work that allows me to never stop learning and be jumping to get to work everyday. I would also like to continue travelling the world.
What is your advice for DPS kids about achieving their goals?
It is important to find something that you feel passionate about and want to work hard at. If you can do this then reaching your goals will be a breeze because you are where you want to be. Dare to dream about what you want to achieve, because if you don’t someone else will!
