At Douglas Park School...
- We use learning conferences with parent/child and teacher to inform and gain feedback from all to all.
- Learning conferences give parents a chance to “sit beside” their child and talk to them about their learning in a purposeful way.
- Our learning conferences are an important part of the learning process… we expect our students to take responsibility for their learning.
- We build a learning focused relationship. In this relationship both the student and the teacher know that by working together the quality of student learning will be much better and the standard of achievement much higher.
- Our students are active partners in every aspect of the learning process. They know... where they are going, how they are going and where to next.
- In each classroom, Learning Intentions are used to make the learning clear.... Learning Intentions explain what a student is learning in a lesson or series of lessons.
- Success Criterias are the important features that students must have to be successful in their learning.
- When we are clear about what is to be learnt, research shows that there are a number of important shifts for the student. Their motivation improves, they stay on task, their behaviour improves, they are more apt to engage in self regulation i.e they take more responsibility for their learning.
Learning conferences, led by the student:
- Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning.
- Helps students recognise and take ownership for the things that interfered with their learning.
- Develop students’ oral communication and organisational skills.
- Shape their ability to clarify what they are learning and assess their own progress.
- Enhance communication between student and parents around their school learning.
The best person to talk about their learning is the learner!
