About Hockey
|
Hockey Hockey is a great team sport and helps children develop good skills, co-ordination and strategies. Playing a team sport is an excellent way for children to learn about commitment and team work, turning up each week for practise and the game. At Douglas Park school we play hockey all year round. In Term 1 each year, students have the opportunity to play indoor hockey. This is a 6 a –side game played in the hall at Clareville. Great for building speed and skills. In Terms 2 and 3, children can be part of one of our outdoor teams. We field an 11 a-side team, this team plays in the Intermediate grade competition. We play against Yr 7 and 8 students and are able to match our skills against much bigger and older students. This is Daring to Dream in action. Many of our students go on to play representative hockey for Wairarapa. Students are encouraged to play their first outdoor season from when they are 5. In Term 4, we play Twilight hockey. This is played on half a turf, at Clareville and is 7 a –side. This is a fun game and often gives students who play other sports in the winter, a chance to give hockey a go. We are lucky that we have teachers, office staff and parents who all help to coach. We believe as with all learning that it is important to get the basics right first. Our hockey teams are well coached and play with enthusiasm and determination. Please contact Jane Macdonald with any queries. |
